Two Girls, One TBR: Halloween Special, Spooky Romantasy Recs & The Shadow Daddy Spritz!

Welcome back to the blog! Grab your favorite Halloween candy and gather around the cauldron because our Halloween Special is officially live.

Kirsty, Jess, and I brought total chaos to this episode. We dressed to thrill in our costumes (skull makeup, a pizza slice, and the Lorax) and spent the whole time talking about our favorite spooky season reads, debating classic horror movies, and sharing terrifying local urban legends.

Before we get to the books, we have to celebrate the absolute best part of the episode. Jess is in her second trimester and she is officially having a BABY GIRL! We are so excited for her and are already brainstorming the perfect bookish names. Drop your best dark fantasy baby name suggestions in the comments below!

🦇 The Potion: The Shadow Daddy Spritz

Because the only thing better than a villain... is a villain who buys you a drink.

This week's potion is dark, it is bubbly, and it has a blood-red rim that will make you feel like a literal vampire queen.

What You Need:

2 oz black cherry juice

1.5 oz tequila

0.5 oz lime juice

Ginger beer (to top)

Red chamoy or grenadine (for the rim)

Assembly:

Rim your glass with the red syrup.

Shake the cherry juice, tequila, and lime juice together with ice.

Strain into your glass and top it off with ginger beer!

Mocktail Swap: Just swap the tequila for a little extra black cherry juice and a splash of sparkling water.

📚 Current Reads & Spooky Season Recs

We talked about what we are currently reading, including Avalon University, A Court of Frost and Starlight, and Tallow and Bone. We also spent way too much time trying to figure out the identity of the mysterious Stranger in Sorrows and Strangers without spoiling the big reveal!

For our main recommendations, we brought out the heavy hitters for October. If you want something dark, witchy, or thrilling, we highly recommend checking out Phantasma, Enchantra, and Nocticadia. (Just remember the creepy worm warning for that last one!)

👻 Haunted Places & Horror Movie Takes

To wrap up the spooky vibes, we traded stories about real eerie locations. Living near Louisville, I had to bring up the terrifying Waverly Hills Sanatorium and the legend of the Pope Lick Bridge. We also discussed the abandoned town of Wittenoom and Wolf Creek, comparing our favorite childhood nightmares and why sometimes reading a dark psychological thriller is way scarier than actually watching a horror movie.

Are you a scary movie fan, or do you stick to fluffy reads to stay safe? Let me know in the comments!
