Author Grace Hughes

Welcome to the Author Spotlight for Grace Hughes and the eldritch horrors of the Skyfall series! 🖤✨

Hello Besties, Rebecca here, and I am still completely losing my mind over our Season 5 premiere! Kirsty, Jess, and I sat down in the virtual studio with the brilliant indie author Grace Hughes, and we got into all the unhinged details of her debut masterpiece When the Sky Breaks. Seriously. My brain is melting from the atmospheric dread, and her ability to write a golden retriever MMC who is also fiercely protective is unmatched. If you missed this episode, you need to fix that right now.

Grab your favorite Potion (we made a blackberry bourbon cocktail called Milkweed's Magic for this one), get comfy, and hit play on the episode below! Let's talk about her amazing work!

Where to Start with Grace Hughes

This woman has built a world that is completely unputdownable, and honestly, you need her on your TBR right now. She is strictly an Ahmad tea girl before 1 PM and a LaCroix queen in the afternoon. And when she is not writing, she is out hiking and birding, which completely explains how she writes terrifying wilderness survival elements so perfectly! Here is the breakdown so you know exactly what to add to your list.

For the Gothic Horror and Marriage of Convenience Girlies: When the Sky Breaks

If you love a morally gray world, suffocating atmospheric dread, and a heavy dose of monster hunting grit, you absolutely need this dark romantasy debut. It dropped on August 18th, and we have been screaming about it ever since. One minute everything is calm. The next an eldritch creature tears out of a portal and unalives Sorcha's father right where he stood.

To secure her claim to the Outer Court, Sorcha (pronounced Soor-ka) is forced into a strategic marriage with her father's steward, Neal. The tension between them is so out of control. Neal is loyal to a fault and trying to stay professional, but his secret devotion will make you absolutely feral. Also Grace's dream cast for them is Florence Pugh for Sorcha, Aidan Turner for Neal, and David Tennant for Ansel the monster hunter, which is literally god tier casting!

Here is exactly what you are getting yourself into:

  • When the Sky Breaks (Skyfall Book 1): Magic flows wrong, the suspense is unmatched, and the survival stakes are sky high. The book has a solid 2 out of 5 on The Spice-o-Meter, giving us that sweet, agonizing slow burn tension. It is dripping with an age gap romance, intentional pregnancy, reverse grumpy x sunshine vibes, and a touch her and die dynamic that will have you entirely feral.

  • Skyfall Book 2: Title TBA, but it is part of a planned romantasy horror trilogy! We are already sobbing just thinking about the emotional damage coming our way.

Exploring Her Other Worlds and Projects

Because Grace is a total powerhouse, she isn't just stopping at the Skyfall trilogy. She casually dropped that she is also working on a brand new dark military epic fantasy trilogy! Exploring her dark fantasy projects gives you more of that raw, emotional damage and character driven chaos that makes her writing so addictive. We definitely want to put Neal on The Trope Trial in a future episode because his devoted protector energy is just everything.
